A Manual J load calculation is the industry-standard method for determining how much heating and cooling a home actually needs. Developed by ACCA (the Air Conditioning Contractors of America), it's the calculation most Florida building departments and energy codes expect when a new HVAC system is designed.
Instead of estimating equipment size based on square footage alone, a Manual J accounts for the factors that actually drive heating and cooling loads: the home's orientation, insulation, window types and areas, ceiling heights, number of occupants, local climate data, and more.
The result is a room-by-room breakdown of the heating and cooling loads. That breakdown is what lets an engineer size equipment correctly and design ductwork that delivers the right amount of air to each space.
Why does this matter in Florida? Because Florida's heat and humidity make oversizing especially problematic. An oversized system cools the space too quickly, short-cycles, and never runs long enough to remove humidity. A Manual J is the first step toward a system that's actually comfortable.
If you're building, remodeling, or adding on, a Manual J is the foundation of a properly designed HVAC system — and it's a core part of what we provide.
